How to Copy a Card And Make it Your Own  Using Color Theory [Tutorial]

How do you copy a card and make it your own using color theory? “Color theory is the general application of color principles to design” (techopedia.com). It’s a set of principles used for working with colors. “It involves color mixing, considering the visual effects of color, and creating pleasing color combinations” (study.com). In this project tutorial I will show you how to use color theory to change up the color scheme of a card you want to copy.

Color Schemes

The first thing you need to do is choose a card to copy. I chose the card above (page 28 of the 2018 Occasions Catalog). The color scheme for this card is Garden Green, Lemon Lime Twist, Real Red and Whisper White. The second thing you want to do is examine the card you want to copy. What do you like about the card? What would you like to change? I love the Kiwi DSP (designer series paper) and the primary color of this DSP, Lemon Lime Twist. What I don’t like is the green  piece of  DSP that is layered on top of the Kiwi DSP. The green on green just doesn’t appeal to me. I like my cards to pop with color. So I am going to copy this card and use color theory to create a card that reflects my tastes in color.

Color Theory

Let’s use a little color theory to analyze this card. Red and green are complementary colors, meaning they are directly across from each other on the color wheel, and they go together because of that fact. Think Christmas. Red and green are the colors that represent this holiday. The Lemon Lime Twist is an analogous color to the Garden Green, which means it is next to the Garden Green on the color wheel, and again, according to color theory those two colors go together. The Lemon Lime Twist is part of our In Color Collection. These are a trendy collection of colors that are available for two years, giving you a choice of fresh colors to use along with our main color lines. I like how the Lemon Lime Twist adds a punch of color to the card. The Whisper White offers a nice neutral backdrop for the card.

My Color Scheme

For the next step in the process of choosing my colors, I used the Tutti-Frutti DSP to guide me. I looked through the Tutti-Frutti DSP and found that I liked the Rich Razzleberry pattern on the reverse side of the apple and pear pattern. See below (This DSP is two rows down and four columns across).

So, why does this color scheme work? According to color theory, Lemon Lime Twist (yellow-green) is the complementary color to Rich Razzleberry (red-purple). They are directly across from each other on the color wheel. Click here to see the color wheel I used.

This is the card I made with a cute matching envelope. I just love how the Lemon Lime Twist pops against the Rich Razzleberry. Stampin’ Up! Suites make it so easy to choose colors that coordinate because they have already done the hard work for you. But, now you know the color theory behind it.

Tutti-Frutti Suite Color Scheme

I really love the Tutti-Frutti Suite. The colors are so bright and cheery. The number of colors in this suite can be overwhelming. There are thirteen, which is not typical of our DSP’s. Most of them have between 6-8 colors. I would suggest you use 3 or 4 that speak to you. Alternatively, you can also use the colors in one sheet of designer series paper to guide your choice of color schemes. Or, go for it and use them all! I hope you are inspired to copy a card and make it your own using color theory.

Leave me a comment letting me know what color combination you would use to copy a card and make it your own using color theory and the Tutti-Frutti Suite. Click here to view our entire color collection of 50 colors.
